Verb tenses tell us when an action took place in the present, past or future. Verbs are words which express actions. The tense of a verb tells us the time when the action took place, in the past, the present or the future. There are three main tenses: present, past and future.

These sentences are written in the present tense: • I walk into the monster's cave. • I am walking into the monster's cave. The present tense is made up of simple present (actions which happen regularly), present progressive (actions which are taking place now) and present perfect (actions which are now completed).
These are examples of sentences written in the past tense: • I walked into the monster's cave. • I was walking into the monster's cave. The past tense is made up of simple past (actions which took place at a specific time and are now finished), past progressive (Actions which took place in the past over a period of time) and past perfect (actions which were completed by a particular point in the past).
These sentences are written in the future tense: • I will walk into the monster's cave. • I will be walking into the monster's cave. The future tense is made up of simple future (actions which will take place in the future), future progressive (actions which will take place in the future over a period of time) and future perfect (actions which will be completed by a particular point in the future).

The 'perfect' tenses (present perfect, past perfect and future perfect) are usually used to talk about actions that are completed by the present or a particular point in the past or future. To form the perfect tense we use the present / past / future form of the verb to have and the past participle of the main verb (I have walked / I had walked / I would have walked). We use the present perfect tense to talk about our experiences in a way that does not refer to when they happened : I have never been abroad. We also use this tense to talk about an action which started in the past and is continuous up until now : I have been a doctor for ten years. We also use this tense to talk about something that has happened in the past but has a result in the present : I have lost my passport. (The result in the present is that I don't have my passport).
