EVOLUTION OF COVID 19 • It was a strange illness – the editorial in NEJM revealed as much (March 26, 2020, N Engl J Med 2020; 382: 1268 -1269 DOI: 10. 1056/NEJMe 2002387) • Earliest report was a documentation of the first 425 cases (March 26, 2020, N Engl J Med 2020; 382: 1199 -1207, DOI: 10. 1056/NEJMoa 2001316) • A corona virus • Median age of 59 years • higher morbidity and mortality- elderly & with coexisting conditions • No cases in children < 15 years of age • case fatality rate - 2% • Even the WHO - reported a strange disease – pneumonia of unknown cause affecting 44 in Wuhan china) (https: //www. who. int/csr/don/05 -january-2020 -pneumoniaof-unkown-cause-china/en/)
• A recent study accepted in Pediatrics journal for AAP • 2, 143 children –confirmed/suspected COVID-19 @Chinese Center for Disease Control and Prevention, Jan 16 - Feb 8/ 2020. • 90 percent – • No symptoms or only mild (fever, fatigue, muscle aches, cough, sore throat, runny nose, and sneezing) to moderate (with pneumonia, frequent fevers, variable cough and shortness of breath) symptoms. • These children were reported to make a full recovery with no complications. • Children of all ages were shown to be susceptible to contracting the coronavirus • 4% - no symptoms at all • 125 children, (6%) - serious symptoms • gastrointestinal system, the kidneys, the heart and lungs compromise. • 0. 4% required critical care support • One death - 14 -year-old - no information about any potential underlying health conditions in this case. • This is the largest study to date on children. • We need more data • Serious complications in <19 are rare.
Summary of Epidemiology • Globally, 36, 211 people have died, with 755, 591 testing positive. • USA – • New epicenter with 153, 246 confirmed cases - about 52, 000 more than 2 nd worst-hit country, Italy. • Germany - • Better than Spain & Italy, but jump on Monday of 4, 751 cases, total now 57, 000. • 541 total deaths • UK – • 180 more deaths/24 hours, total deaths now 1, 408 • Spain – • 6, 400 new cases on Monday, the lowest increase in new cases for a week. The total of deaths reached 7, 340 after 812 new fatalities. • Italy – • Death toll 812 in 24 hours, • Friday peaked at 919 deaths/24 hours • The total death toll is now 11, 591. • However, the number of new cases rose by just 1, 648 - the lowest number of new cases this week. • The number of people who've recovered has also gone up to 14, 620, with 1, 590 recoveries since yesterday.
