What it means § Most organizations have built strong data integration competencies with broad adoption across the enterprise. § More organizations require data to be transferred in real time in addition to traditional scheduled batch transfers. § Most organizations like their current ETL product. § Vendor consolidation of data quality management, data profiling, and metadata management into ETL platforms is justified by customer adoption of these complementary capabilities. 11 © 2012 Forrester Research, Inc. Forrester Wave: Ab Initio Strengths Weaknesses § Much more than an ETL vendor § Very high level of customer satisfaction and loyalty § Supports high-end data integration and real-time requirements § Offers complementary products — data quality, data profiling, and metadata management § Customer feedback shares high ROI and low TCO relative to other options. § The only vendor that has seamlessly integrated the business rules engine with ETL § Does not directly support ELT § Its CDC capability is average. § Its data quality support is average. § Support for unstructured and semistructured data is average. § Almost no marketing to help educate customers and help evangelists build business case 19 © 2012 Forrester Research, Inc. Forrester Wave: IBM Strengths Weaknesses § Highly scalable Data. Stage product to § Can be expensive support any large/extreme ETL § For smaller requirements, the ETL requirements solution might be an overkill. § Comprehensive set of features § Strong product integration within Information Server portfolio (ETL, DQ, data profiling, metadata management, business glossary, etc. ) § Strong CDC capabilities § Offers more than 120 prebuilt transformation rules § Strong support for federation/virtualization § Strong data quality, data lineage, and data profiling support 20 © 2012 Forrester Research, Inc. Forrester Wave: Informatica Strengths Weaknesses § Most comprehensive set of features § Best scores overall § Finds itself on most large enterprise shortlists § Strong ease-of-use and customer satisfaction feedback from Forrester clients § Large install base § Strong support for data quality, profiling, metadata, and role-specific tools § Extends its focus to big data/cloud § Remains an expensive alternative to the major platform competitors § Ongoing M&A strategy — and positioning beyond traditional ETL capabilities — raises the risk of Informatica stretching itself too thin (it went from ETL vendor to a full data management stack in less than five years). 21 © 2012 Forrester Research, Inc. Forrester Wave: i. Way Software (Information Builders) Strengths Weaknesses § Very large portfolio of connectivity adapters § Has re-energized its data management strategy with the addition of DQ/MDM capabilities to complement integration capabilities § Lack of significant innovation or improvements to the core ETL software over the years from a features, functionality, and user experience standpoint § The focus on ESB and B 2 B scenarios suggests a lesser focus on traditional ETL use cases. § It struggles to gain relevance beyond parent company Information Builder’s BI install base. § Its visibility in the ETL space is not strong — it’s often not shortlisted by customers. 22 © 2012 Forrester Research, Inc. Forrester Wave: Microsoft Strengths Weaknesses § Remains an extremely popular ETL option — popular with SQL Server § High levels of customer satisfaction § Ease of use § Is more than enough for many small enterprise, SMB, and departmental ETL use cases § SSIS 2008 has improved performance and scale. § Low cost — freely bundled with SQL Server § Least heterogeneous ETL tool evaluated — continues to have SQL Server/Windows bias § Does not compete for extremely large deployments (focus on multi-TB max) § Lacks integrated metadata and DQ capabilities § Lacks strong support for data profiling, data lineage, and comprehensive transformation rules § Support for unstructured and semistructured is weak. 23 © 2012 Forrester Research, Inc. Forrester Wave: Oracle Strengths Weaknesses § Finally made a decision on competing ETL solutions: ODI is a strategic DI platform over OWB § Oracle has dramatically improved the performance and scale for its ETL solution — optimized for Oracle databases. § Through the acquisition of Silver Creek Systems and Datanomic, it has improved its data quality capabilities. § Oracle Golden. Gate delivers strong CDC/replication capabilities. § ODI is being strongly embedded as part of Oracle Fusion Middleware Strategy. § ODI integrates with Big Data Appliance. § It can be expensive. § Few Forrester clients have standardized on ODI for the enterprise to date. § Heterogeneous sources are not too strong. § Support for data quality and data profiling is not strong. 24 © 2012 Forrester Research, Inc. Forrester Wave: Pervasive Software Strengths Weaknesses § Differentiated in ability to serve ISV, SI, small enterprise, and SMB markets very effectively § The small footprint and “embeddability” make it an ideal OEM option. § Doubled down on connectivity — provides very robust options § Low cost § Ease of use § Not on the radar for many, large enterprise IT shops § Scalability and performance at high end § Lack of strong data quality, data lineage, and data profiling support § Attractive new offerings in cloudbased integration and highperformance data processing struggle to gain market recognition. 25 © 2012 Forrester Research, Inc. Reproduction Prohibited
Forrester Wave: SAP Strengths Weaknesses § The acquisition of Business. Objects added a strong ETL product to the SAP portfolio in addition to DQ, metadata, and federation. § Good positioning to solve complex operational migration and upgrade requirements for SAP apps customers § Continues to extend its capabilities to support big data and real-time integration using Sybase replication § Integration of data services with SAP HANA § Ease of use § Very good scale and performance § Strong transformation and integration techniques § SAP PI (Process Integration) remains a weak “last-mile” utility — not to be considered for heterogeneous integration requirements. § Less credible in non-BOBJ or non. SAP BW BI environments 26 © 2012 Forrester Research, Inc. Reproduction Prohibited
Forrester Wave: SAS Institute/Data. Flux Strengths Weaknesses § Move of ETL product to Data. Flux and release of new Data Management Platform deliver a less SAS-biased solution § Strong transformation techniques and reusability § Good high-end performance and scale § It still offers SAS DI Studio, which relies heavily on SAS 4 GL language for large, loyal SAS install base. § Good support for data quality, data profiling, and data lineage § The CDC offering is average. § The adoption of ETL is average. § Innovation is not as strong. § Not too many resellers or system integrators 27 © 2012 Forrester Research, Inc. Reproduction Prohibited
Forrester Wave: Talend Strengths Weaknesses § Arguably the most successful open source data integration vendor to date § Increasingly showing up on the shortlists for many large and small enterprises § Low cost — open source/commercial version § Strong support for integration techniques and connectivity § Supports ETL, ELT, and ELT-like Hadoop loading and transformation § Often not considered as a standard by large enterprises but often acceptable as departmental or project-based integration or complementary to key ETL solutions § Aggressive strategy to build out into a unified DI, DQ, and MDM platform is likely stretching this relatively new vendor thin — offering breadth at the expense of depth § Its open source data quality and MDM solutions have not reached the same level of credibility and effectiveness as an ETL offering. 28 © 2012 Forrester Research, Inc.
