Web-Based, Inquiry-Based Lesson Planning Tool Jeff C. Marshall Clemson University NSTA 2009 Conference
Overview • What is the Website based on? • What is the Web Tool? • How can you access or create Lesson Exemplars? • How can you interact with others using the Web Tool? • How can you get involved?
THINGS THAT IMPROVE LEARNING • Inquiry-Based Instruction (Bybee et al. , 2006; Marshall et al. , 2008) – Improves critical and higher order thinking • Formative Assessment (Black & Wiliam, 1998; Keeley, 2008) – Critical during at all stages of learning and instruction • Reflective Practice (NBPTS, 1994) – Instruction is intentional and adapts to learners needs
4 E x 2 INSTRUCTIONAL MODEL Critical for Inquiry: Students must be allowed to Explore ideas before Explanation of concepts occurs R A Engage e s f s l Explore e e s c s Explain t m i e o n Extend n t
ASSESSMENT PORTION OF 4 E x 2 Formative assessment central to dynamic learning model: • Engage: Assess prior knowledge • Explore: Assess process of investigative skills • Explain: Assess critical thinking, communication skills, ability to synthesize data • Extend: Assess level of application of concepts and ideas A s s e s s m e n t Engage Explore Explain Extend
REFLECTION PORTION OF 4 E x 2 Reflective practice deepens meta -learning opportunities: Engage Explore Explain Extend R e f l e c t i o n • Engage—brainstorm ideas, KWL, link to prior lesson • Explore—design, formulate an investigation • Explain—evaluate what was learned and what needs to be improved in future studies • Extend—communicate how learning applies to new ideas
WHAT IS THE IIM WEB TOOL? • Standards based portal for inquiry-based science lessons where lessons can be: – Downloaded and used – Modified as needed – Modified and then published for public to view – Created anew (individually or as a group) • Place where teachers can interact with others
