Weaving Global Perspectives into Educator Preparation to Address AAQEP Standards

Session Goals • Highlight the importance of teachers promoting a global perspective • Describe UK’s evolving story – small steps, BIG dreams • Relate EPP to AAQEP and teaching performance standards • Consider compatibility of related areas (culturally responsive practice …) • Suggest resources to guide and assess globally minded teaching

PK-12 Classrooms are more diverse than ever! USDE data show that during the 2013 -14 year in schools across the nation: The majority of students were classified as “minorities”. 10% were English Learners (EL) with 38 home languages spoken. (USDE, 2018)

In the Fayette County Public School District: 52 % students classified as minority 12% classified as English Learners 87 native languages spoken Lexington-Fayette Urban County Government. (2019)

These data also show an increase in EL students served by our local schools of more than 300 % in last decade. Lexington-Fayette Urban County Government (2019)

UK’s EPP enrollment data indicate that the large majority of candidates are Caucasian and Female 87% Caucasian and 80% female across certification programs (University of Kentucky, 2016)
