Warm Up October 3, 2019 1. What is uniformitarianism? Identify at least two forces that support uniformitarianism. 2. How do we know that bacteria were the first organisms to ever live on our planet? When did they first evolve? 3. What is the difference between weathering and erosion? Objectives: 8. E. 2. 1 & 2. 2 -TSWU the difference between weathering and erosion. -TSWU how deposition eventually leads to the formation of sedimentary rock layers. Essential Question: -What is the difference between weathering and erosion?

Weathering and Erosion Weathering • Breakdown of rock into smaller pieces • Mechanical and chemical Erosion • Movement of sediment from one place to another • Wind and water

Deposition and Sediment Deposition Sediment • Sediments are • Rock that has been dropped

Deposition and Sediment Deposition Sediment • Sediments are • Rock that has been dropped off and relocated by erosion • Pile up to create layers broken down into smaller pieces. • Sand, silt, clay, ash and more

The Procedures for Your Cartoon • 1. Minimum of four cartoon squares. Each square must have at least two vocabulary terms (cartoon characters). • 2. All concept cartoon drawings must speak at least once. • 3. Cartoon characters must speak to each other in a conversation, not a monolog telling someone what to do. • 4. All cartoon characters must interact together. • 5. You must use the word “because” in the cartoon at least one time. • 6. Rough Draft: Write your conversation on a regular piece of paper first. Then add conversation bubbles to the cartoon characters that are speaking the words. • 7. Follow my example on the whiteboard.

Cartoon Activity – Reflection Questions Glue and answer the following questions on the back of your cartoon activity. 1. What are sediments? Provide at least 3 examples. 2. What is erosion and name the forces that cause it. 3. What is deposition? 4. How does deposition change the surface of Earth? 5. What is the difference between weathering and erosion? 6. Describe how weathering reduces the height of mountains over millions of years. 7. What are two ways scientists determine the relative age of rocks and fossils? 8. What are three types of rocks found on Earth? Briefly describe how each form. 9. Describe how deposition and sedimentary rocks layers are related. 10. Create a Venn Diagram and compare and contrast weathering and erosion (two facts per section).
