WEATHER Read each slide. Look at each picture. Answer each question.
There are many kinds of weather.
Places close to the North and South Poles are very cold.
Places close to the Equator are very hot.
Less sunshine reaches the Poles because of the tilt of the Earth. More sunshine reaches the Equator.
The Equator is an imaginary line around the middle of the Earth. The Equator is closest to the sun so the equator is always hot.
Florida is located close to the Equator. Florida does not have a cold winter because it is close to the Equator.
The tilt of the Earth gives us our seasons and our climate.
Snow is frozen water that falls from the sky when the temperature drops below freezing.
Freezing is 32 degrees Fahrenheit or 0 degrees Celsius.
We rarely get snow in Florida because it does not get below freezing very often.
Florida has lots of rain in wintertime.
Sometimes Florida has tornados. Tornados form during very bad thunderstorms.
A tornado is a rotating column of air. The winds can be traveling up to 500 miles per hour.
We also have hurricanes in Florida.
Hurricanes are huge tropical storms that start out over the warm ocean waters. Hurricanes have an eye in the middle. Can you find the eye of the storm?
Scientists that measure and predict the weather are Meteorologists.
Meteorologists use tools to measure and predict the weather. A thermometer is a tool to measure temperature.
This side of thermometer tells us degrees Fahrenheit. This side tells us degrees Celsius.
A barometer measures air pressure. A change in air pressure means a change in the weather.
