Fronts & Storms • There are many different types of fronts and storms, but they all have to do with the weather. • Fronts are the line where two air masses meet. • The most usual fronts you’ve probably heard of are warm fronts and cold fronts. – Warm front – when a warm air mass moves into an area of cold air masses. – Cold front – when a cold air mass moves into an area of warm air masses.
Fronts & Storms • Storms are a violent disturbance in the atmosphere caused by a collision of different types of fronts. • Common types of storms that you have heard of are: – – Thunderstorms – when a cold air mass moves over a warm air mass. Cyclones – when rising warm air is replaced with cooler air. Hurricanes – very powerful cyclone that forms over tropical waters. Tornadoes – a whirling funnel shape cloud.
Facts • Thunderstorms kill more people each year than tornadoes or hurricanes. • Cold fronts can move twice as fast and produce sharper changes in weather than warm fronts. • Tornadoes can last up to an hour or more depending on their classification.
Predicting the Weather • Meteorologists use many different systems to determine the weather. • The predicting of weather is called forecasting. • The most common thing they use is the Doppler Radar. – Doppler Radar – an advanced radar that tracks storms.
• Many of our every day tasks depend on weather. • Being able to predict weather Makes all types of transportation a lot safer. • Being Able to forecast is also helpful because it alerts us with dangerous and life threatening weather conditions. •
• Weather and being able to predict weather also has a strong economic Impact on food producers because if there is bad weather it can damage their crops and they wont be able to sell as much so they wont get as much money. • It also has a strong impact on us because the less the type of food there is the more we have to pay for the food.
• Satellite technology is constantly being improved so it can send meteorologist the best data and pictures. • Air crafts will be able to get better data before flying, so they can watch out for things like storms. • NASA is working on a project that will revolutionize weather technology.
