► “Wear” = Damage to a solid surface, generally involving progressive loss of material, due to relative motion between the surface and a contacting substance or substances. ► “Erosion” = progressive loss of original material from a solid surface due to mechanical interaction between that surface and a fluid. 2
Changes shape and alters function. Wear can produce debris that excite an inflammatory response in the body. 3
Types of Wear ► (1) Adhesive wear ► (2) Abrasive wear ► (3) Surface fatigue wear ► (4) Corrosive wear 4
Adhesive Wear ► The friction force between conforming solids is due, in part, to bonding of asperities or high spots on the mating surfaces 5
Abrasive Wear ►A hard/sharp particle moving on a softer surface. § Two-body wear § Three-body wear ► e. g. nail filing, using sandpaper, hard bristle tooth brush vs. tooth, wear of shoes, … 6
Surface Fatigue Wear ► Induced by particles between the two opposing surfaces which leads to surface or subsurface cracks ► Particles break off under cyclic loading and sliding 7
Corrosive Wear ► Related to the chemical activity of the wear surfaces. § e. g. rust on iron or steel 8
