Session 1. 5 Blending for Lab, Clinical, and Studio Courses
Web-Enhanced Flipping Blending A class where all credit hours take place in a classroom. Direct instruction takes place outside of the classroom. Some classroom time is shifted online. Some technology is used for homework, posting materials online, or having students submit assignments. Classroom time is spent working on assignments and projects as the instructor becomes a guideon-the-side. Time students would have spent in a classroom takes place online instead. They can complete activities, review content, or work on projects.
Blending Facts There is no one perfect ‘blend’ Blending does not create ‘days off’ Lends itself to reduced classroom capacity
Example 1 3 Credit Course meets MWF for 50 minutes. Instead of meeting on Friday, students watch a short recorded lecture online and then complete an activity (discussion, writing activity, working on a project, etc. ) New online work released after class on Wednesday, due before class on Monday.
Example 2 Lab Course meets MW for 90 minutes. Instead of meeting on Monday, students watch a recorded demo/simulation of a lab exercise online and a short lecture video (or Zoom. ) They also work on assigned readings and prep-work for Wednesday in the classroom. New online work released after class on Wednesday, due before next Wednesday.
Example 3 Studio course meets TR for 4 hours. The class is split in half - half come one day and half come the other day. Students watch online demo videos, read, review samples, and do prep-work before coming to class next the week. New online work released after Thursday class, due before following class meeting.
Blending + Flipping = Blipping Well, that’s what we call it anyway.
