CASH DISCOUNT APPROACH EXAMPLE (Make it your own) How y’all doin today? How long y’all been in business? Great! My name is Sean Johnson, and I am a local business owner in the area helping small businesses with credit card stuff. Quick question for you, “Who do you use to take credit cards? ” Alternate opening: Great! My name is Sean Johnson and I work with small businesses here in the area… Just had a quick question for you, “Who do you use to take credit cards? ” Oh, _____, I have heard of them! I’m just curious… have you heard anything about the cash discount program? ? Really? ? Well, if I am able to TOTALLY eliminate all your credit card fees, and at the same time increase the flow of cash to your business, I AM SURE you would do business with me today, wouldn’t you? Good
Business owners everywhere are jumping into the cash discount program, for example, I am sure you have seen as you drive around town or on the highway gas stations that have like a cash price for $3. 00 and a credit card price for $3. 18…you have seen that right? Of course! That’s the cash discount, and they are paying ZERO in fees! Also, I know you have seen this, when you took your wife out to get that new car and you saw that sticker that said $25, 000. Well, when that sales guy leaned over and asked you how you were going to pay, the second you said you were gonna finance it, you knew you weren’t getting that cash discount price of $25 k right? Or when you took your car in for inspection and you pulled out your credit card, what did they do? They added a fee for using credit card right? You see everyone is going to cash discount because it eliminates the fees.
Explaining the Program: Okay, here’s how it works---you don’t need to change your prices or menu--because all displayed prices---they are the cash discount price! So, when your customers pay cash, they actually get a discount! However, whenever someone pulls out a credit card, well, they just don’t get the cash discount---they are paying the actual price which is displayed on the signage. OBJECTION: I DON’T WANNA CHARGE MY CUSTOMER!!! EXAMPLE REBUTTALS: 1. (Practice Active Listening & tell them to just try it) Ok, Jim, what you are really saying that if you try out the cash discount program and you are saving $6 -700 a month, you’re afraid you might lose customers right?
I totally understand how you are feeling, and Jim, I wanna ask you something, when you ask a customer if they want a receipt, they normally don’t right? Of course not! And when you give them one— they normally just ball it up and throw it away right? So customers don’t even notice!! They don’t care because today everybody loves using credit cards! [ASSERTIVE] So here’s what I am going to do for you Jim: I am gonna put my machine in here for a month and I just want you to try it out! Personally I think you’re gonna love it when on the first of next month instead of seeing 5, 6, $800 bill—all you will see is $45—I think you will love it, Jim! But I tell you what, if anytime between now and then you or your customers aren’t 100% lovin it---just gimme a call on my cell because I work for you Jim!
You see those employees over there, Jim—you pay them to take care of stuff for you right? Well, I work for you and take care of all your credit card stuff from now on—I work for you but I pay myself really well—HAHA!—Ok Jim, so if you’re not lovin it, just call me and I will come and hit a button, and you will be doing exactly what you are doing right now, just 30 -50% cheaper! Now if you have a statement, I can actually show you to the penny how I can leave 30 -50% more in your bank account each month—do you have one handy or can I pick it up when I come back? Ok Jim, Any questions? ? [CLOSE]
2. (Cash Customer Discount) Jim, I completely understand you saying you don’t want to charge your customer—I get it---(Look around business)—Jim, how long you been here? 5 years? Wow! Looks like you got a pretty successful business and I bet you are not running a 3 -4% deficit every month are you, Jim? Of course not! You make sure you pay all your bills—including your credit card stuff—every month right, Jim? Well, that tells me that you have built all your credit card fees into your prices to make sure you cover your cost right Jim? Yep, and tell me something, is it really fair to your cash customer to be paying for somebody else to get 2% or 5% cash back? Is that really fair Jim? Or should she be paying for someone else’s trip to Paris? Jim, doesn’t that cash customer actually deserve a real discount? And Jim, don’t you? Why should you be paying for somebody to go to Paris right? So here is what I am going to do for you Jim, I am going to put my machine in for the next 30 days and I want you to try this out!—[USE ASSERTIVE ABOVE]
3. (RUN THE NUMBERS) Jim, I completely understand you saying you don’t want to charge your customer —I get it—[pull out your calculator] but here is something to think about: Now Jim you said you are paying $1, 000/month right? [type into calculator on phone] x by 12=so Jim that’s $12, 000 a year you are paying in credit cards correct? Ok, Jim, I told you that your only investment with me is $45/month right? [type into calculcator on phone] x by 12= so Jim, with me, you are only investing $540/year!! Think about that! $12, 000 you’re giving away to pay for somebody else to have a great vacation, renovate their house, help their kid go to college— Jim, wouldn’t it just make more sense to use that $12, 000 to take your wife on that dream vacation, or help put your kid through college? Of course!! So here is what I am going to do for you, I am going to put my machine in for the next 30 days and I want you to try this out!—[USE ASSERTIVE ABOVE]
OBJECTION: I NEED TO THINK ABOUT IT: Jim, didn’t you tell me earlier that if I could show to totally eliminate your credit card fees, and at the same time increase cash flow to your business—you said you would do business with me today, didn’t you? What’s changed Jim? Is It me? Did I not share something clearly enough? Is it the equipment? You don’t think I’ll bring you state of the art equipment? Or is it the money? You don’t think I’m leaving you enough in your bank account every month? Now Jim, you said we would do business today, so we are gonna do business today, so I want you to give this cash discount a shot—[USE ASSERTIVE ABOVE] Now, Jim if you do not want to do cash discount, then here’s what I will do for you— you can keep doing exactly what you have been doing just 30 -50% cheaper! I’ll show you to the penny how much money I am able to leave in your bank account. The key is to give your merchants options—if they don’t want to do cash discount, do traditional. Get the statement and send it in. This is not a hard sale but a conversation informing the merchant of a great opportunity. See yourself as his consultant providing your best recommendations
