“We Have Become a Spectacle to the World” (1 st Corinthians 4) 1. Paul and Apollos are Servants and Stewards Ø Servants. Never the master Ø Stewards. Never the owner
“We Have Become a Spectacle to the World” (1 st Corinthians 4) 2. Paul Does Not Accept Judgment According to the Flesh Ø Paul did not allow fleshly comparisons to intimidate him: weakly physique & poor speech (2 nd Cor. 10: 10) Ø Paul does not even judge (approve) himself according to fleshly proficiencies. At best, his flesh would not make him approved or superior to others. Should not choose Absalom over David (2 nd Sam. 14: 25 -26; 16: 1 -6) Ø The power of the message is in the message, not the servant of the message. The message must be measured by the Spirit of God, which does not measure according to the flesh (1 st Cor. 4: 20; 1 st Sam. 16: 1 -13; 1 st Cor. 2: 13 -16). “The Lord looks at the heart. ”
“We Have Become a Spectacle to the World” (1 st Corinthians 4) 3. The World, and Carnal Christians, consider Paul a Spectacle Ø Condemned to death, as failures. (1 st Cor. 4: 8; Isa. 52: 14) As Jesus was abhorred in appearance. Ø Dishonored; irrelevant, not stimulating (1 st Cor. 4: 10). The church was not proud of Paul, hoped he did not show up. Ø Fools; suffering for unprofitable outcomes (1 st Cor. 4: 11 -13) Ø Actually noble, honorable, to be imitated. (1 st Cor. 4: 14 -21)
