Impact of C-19 on Young Peoples mental health struggling to find motivation finding it hard to keep a routine not keeping up with day to day chores being less interested in things usually enjoyed sleeping a lot more or less increasing the use of alcohol and other drugs struggling to exercise feeling worried about the future.
What can we do… Support young people to reconnect with headspace centres or a service they have a relationship with The easing of restrictions might be an exciting, fun, and enjoyable time for some. For others, it might be scary, uncertain or overwhelming. It’s normal to feel anything and everything, so remind Young People to be kind to themselves
What can we do… • Ask YP to think about how their life has changed and what they want their life to look like • Think about the fun things they want to do once restrictions ease • Take it slow. Gradually try new things. You don’t need to do everything straight away • Start with something that seems easier, before moving to difficult things
What can we do… • If worried about catching the virus remember to practice hand hygiene and physical distancing • Think about what they might need to do if things don’t go well, and think a few ideas of what might help get back on track • Keep in mind that things may change and restrictions could start again.
Preparing for change… • While some people are looking forward to this, it doesn’t mean the next few weeks or months will be smooth sailing for everyone. • YP may be thinking that returning to life before COVID-19 seems like a huge task • Finding things that used to be easy becoming difficult, worrying or scary
Preparing for change… • Realising Young Person wants to make changes to their life • Wondering if friendships will be the same • Thinking about how to re-establish intimate relationships • Worrying about alcohol and other drugs use
Data on Impact of C-19 on headspace Centres… • 35. 2% less than this time in 2019 • C-19 recorded as Primary/ Secondary reason for treatment: 4. 3% • Services delivered in the past week: telephone (55%), followed by online (20%), and in-person (25%). • Referrals to headspace centres are 35% below the 6 -month average
Early results on headspace telehealth survey n: 300 YP and 350 Clinicians • 88% clinicians report that telehealth services can be an effective way to provide clinical services to young people • 82% clinicians felt confident and 80% felt supported to deliver telehealth services • 73% clinicians report that post COVID-19 they would like to continue to offer telehealth services • 95% young people said they had a positive experience with telehealth • 88% young people said they could build a connection with the staff member they saw • 80% young people felt telehealth was suitable for their needs
Aboriginal & Torres Strait Islander Snap Shot 1, 206 young people accessed Early Psychosis program. 1, 005 young people accessed a range of eheadspace services. 348 young people accessing headspace digital work & study. National are co-designing with Aboriginal & Torres Strait Islander Youth Reference Group a national social media campaign for First Nations communities. Establishment of a Yarn Safe Group chat for young people.
