Consolidation Key words Social Stratification: Week 1 Match up the keywords below with the correct definition. Dictatorship, Proportional Representation (PR), Representative Democracy, The Government of the UK, State In many nations the political system is based on this i. e. government by the people. Power is distributed widely, and the government’s power is based on rational legal authority rather than on coercion. Political power is concentrated in the hands of a person who rules by force. Censorship of the media occurs under this type of rule and propaganda campaigns are used to promote the views of the leader and win people’s loyalty. Citizens elect representatives who make political decisions on their behalf. In the UK general elections are held in which voters in a constituency each cast one vote. Most candidates belong to a political party such as Labour or Conservative and the candidate with the most votes becomes the Member of Parliament (MP) and sits in the House of Commons. This type of electoral system is also known as “winner takes all”. Seats are allocated according to the total number of votes that each party received. PR is used to elect Members of the European Parliament (MEPs) A central part of the political process; refers to the various institutions (such as the police, civil service and judiciary) that organise and regulate society. The role of state institutions is to make, implement and enforce laws. Refers to MPs who are Ministers, selected by the Prime Minister, who is the leader of the governing political party. Although the legal system, the military and the police force are all part of the state, they are independent of the government of the day. 4

Research Social stratification –Political Power: Week 3 The idea of political power is on one level very simple; some groups in society have the power to make decisions while others (the majority) have to live with those decisions. However, this simplistic view hides a much more complicated reality, particularly when we consider the nature of decision making in democratic societies and the ‘power’ of the majority to overturn the established order by voting for radical alternative solutions. The sociologist Steven Lukes (1941 -) suggested that power has three dimensions - he described these as the ‘faces of power’: 1. Who makes the decisions? 2. Who controls the agenda (who decides what can be discussed)? 3. Who has the ability to manipulate the wishes of others? Task Britain has had two recent referendums, one on Scottish Independence and on EU membership. Write a paragraph to explain how Steven Lukes’ idea of the ’three faces of power’ might help people to understand the referendum process and its outcome. ………………………………………………………………………………………………………………………… ………………………………………………………………………………………………………………………… ………………………………………………………………………………………………………………………… …………………………………………………………… Parent/ Carer comments: Date: Teacher Signature:
