Ways of Representing A function can be represented in several different ways, Functions usually as one of the following representations. • • • Story or description in words of some situation Table of values Rule Ordered pairs Graph Different representations are useful in different situations. In this Unit we will encounter all of these representations except the graph. We will focus one the number processor model for functions, as shown in the diagram on the following slide.

Making a Function Table On your TI-30 XB Multi. View. TM, do the following. Press to access the Table feature and enter the rule (as shown), and press The next screen asks for the starting x value (Start), and the amount by which to step the x value (Step) Type Start = 0 Type Step = 1 Leave Auto selected, and press The table of values for the rule and the chosen Start/Step values is displayed. Press to scroll down through the table. The values in the y-column display the amount of water in the tank after each day.
Remember… Remember! To generate a table of values for a given rule • Press and type in the rule and press • Set the Start and Step value for x and press • Set Auto or Ask-x for the table style and press [Note: When entering a rule on the TI-30 XB Multi. View. TM, you will need to modify the variables so that only the letters y and x are used]
Making a List Formula 1. Press and type the numbers 0 to 20 in the first column (called L 1) 2. Press to move to top of the next column (as shown) 3. Press to show the FORMULA menu 4. Press 1 to select Add/Edit Frmla 5. Type L 2 = 300 + 50 L 1 (L 1 can be found by pressing ) 6. Press to calculate Jeff’s total pay for the given values of x
