WAVES
WAVES a repeating disturbance that transfers energy through matter or open space. MECHANICAL WAVES Longitudinal (Sound waves) Transverse (Water waves) ELECTROMAGNETIC WAVES Radio Infrared Visible Ultraviolet X-rays/Gamma
CREST-the high point of a wave. TROUGH- the low point of a wave.
WAVELENGTH-the distance from the top of one crest of a transverse wave to the top of the next. AMPLITUDE-the measure of energy in a wave.
FREQUENCY-the number of wavelengths that pass a fixed point each second.
TRANSVERSE WAVES-matter in the medium moves back and forth at right angles to the direction the wave travels
COMPRESSIONAL WAVE- Matter in the medium moves forward and backward in the same direction the wave travels. COMPRESSION- region of the wave where particles are closest together. RAREFRACTION-region of the wave where particles are far apart
MEDIUM- The matter through which a mechanical wave travels. Can be a solid, liquid, or gas.
INTERFERENCE- the process in which two waves overlap and form a new wave. DESTRUCTIVE INTERFERENCE- occurs when the crest of one wave overlaps the trough of another.
MECHANICAL WAVES- use matter to transfer energy.
SOUND WAVES- can not travel in outer space because they are mechanical waves.
PROPERTIES OF LIGHT 1. Light travels in straight lines. 2. Light travel much faster than sound. 3. We see things because they reflect light into our eyes. 4. Shadows are formed when light is blocked by an object. Laser
Light travels about 300, 000 kilometers per second, which means it can travel around the earth 8 times in 1 second.
REFRACTION- The bending of a light wave as it moves through one medium • Red • Orange • Yellow • Green • Blue • Indigo • Violet
REFLECTION- occurs when a wave strikes an object and bounces off of it. NORMAL-an imaginary line perpendicular to the surface of a medium where a wave strikes.
Clear vs. Diffuse Reflection Smooth, shiny surfaces have a clear reflection: Rough, dull surfaces have a diffuse reflection. Diffuse reflection is when light is scattered in different directions
ELECTROMAGNETIC WAVES- do not require matter to carry energy
