Wave Properties Waves A disturbance that transfers energy
Wave Properties
Waves • A disturbance that transfers energy from place to place.
Types of Waves • Mechanical Waves: needs to travel through some type of matter (medium). Cannot travel through a vacuum (space) • A Medium is any matter through which a wave can travel (air, water, a wall, glass, etc. • Ex. Sound waves, ocean waves
Types of Waves • Electromagnetic Waves: Transfers Electromagnetic radiation, does not need a medium • EM radiation can travel trough space • EM radiation is visible & invisible
Wave Classification • Transverse Waves: Travels perpendicular to the direction of the motion.
Wave Classification • Longitudinal Waves: Travel in the same direction as the source of energy
Type of Waves • Surface Waves: Combination of TRANSVERSE & LONGITUDINAL pg. 45
Wave Properties • Wavelength = the distance a wave travels before it repeats itself • Crest = peak • trough = bottom • Amplitude = from middle to crest or trough
Wave Properties • Frequency = the number of times a wave repeats itself in a given amount of time
Wave Properties • Wave Speed = Wavelength x Frequency
Wave Energy • Shorter wavelength = more energy • Larger amplitude = more energy This Photo by Unknown Author is licensed under CC BY-SA
Key topics 1) What is the main difference b/t mechanical & electromagnetic waves? 2) Draw a transverse & longitudinal wave & label wavelength, amplitude, crest & trough 3) Describe a surface wave 4) Calculate the frequency of a 10 waves every 2 seconds 5) Calculate the speed of a wave w/a W. L. of 7 cm & a frequency of 3 Hz. 6) Explain the relationship b/t wave energy, amplitude, frequency & waves length 7) What occur to energy if the amplitude of the wave doubles?
