What is the Power per Unit Length of a Wave Front? In which A is the amplitude (or height) of the wave, p is the density of the water, g is gravity, and v is the velocity of the wave. The unit is watt per meter

Sample Power Problems 1. If a wave has an amplitude of 2 metres, a density of 1. 02 kg*m-3, and a velocity of 7 ms-1, what is its power? 2. If a wave with an amplitude of 2. 3 meters, velocity of 2 ms-1, and its power is 59 watts per meter, what is its density?

Answers 1. power =. 5 A 2 pgv = (. 5)(2 m)2(1. 02 kg*m 3)(9. 8 N)(7 ms-1) = 139. 9 watts per meter 2. power =. 5 A 2 pgv, p = power/. 5 A 2 gv = 1. 14 kg*m-3

Is Wave Power Renewable? ● What is Renewable Energy? ● The source of wave power is wind o Wind generates waves through friction o The sun generates wind ● It is considered limitless ● ⅔ of the Earth is covered by water

Energy Density of Wave Power ● What is Energy Density? o There is no specific number ● It has the potential to supply 2 terawatts of power yearly ● Could potentially be the cheapest ● The World’s coastal currents could provide ¼ of the world’s energy needs

Why Wave Power? Is it due to its Energy Density? ● Potentially the best cost to energy density ratio ● Wave power has a higher energy density compared to wind and solar o Lower energy density than nuclear fusion, which is 580, 000 Mega. Joules per Kilogram

What would it take to replace a Coal Burning Station ● Coal’s Energy Density: 24 MJ/Kg ● The average coal plant provides power to 250, 000 homes ● The current largest wave plant powers 230, 000 homes ● Potential and development?

How much Wave Power is used in the World? Wave power only accounts for <. 01% of the entire world’s energy production.

Advantage -The necessary materials for wave power to operate (water and wind) are abundant and free to use. -There is no harmful byproduct produced when using wave power

Disadvantage -Intrusion of marine habitats by submerged components -Release of toxic materials from hydraulic leaks could potentially be a problem

Exit Ticket Is wave power a good means of clean energy production? Why?
