Watershed Management
INTERNATIONALLY , THE WATERSHED MANAGEMENT ALWAYS MEETS A RECOGNIZED PROBLEM SUCH AS n n n FLOODING STORMWATER-RELATED PROBLEMS STREAM BANK EROSION POOR WATER QUALITY EROSION AND DEPOSITION WATER SHORTAGE
n n n In Med-areas (semi-arid) areas FLOODING, STORMWATER, STREAM BANK are rare while POOR WATER QUALITY EROSION AND DEPOSITION WATER SHORTAGE are the main problems
Nevertheless , in both cases the “water management” follows some basic principles and methods which are quoted below as follows: a) The establishment of a watershed management team , because water management must be always a methodical, comprehensive and interdisciplinary team approach
Water Management Team Includes n Water Management specialists n Engineers n Planners n Conservationists n Biologists n Soil scientists n Economists n Environmental attorneys n Stakeholders (citizens with a direct interest of the capital of the watershed)
b) Involve county and region authorities (incorporating a consultant of those organizations, if any) c) Organize the stakeholders by formating a watershed association In this association could participate n Wood harvesters n Farmers n Municipal employers n Representation of industry n Students n Members of educational community
d) Identify problems in the watershed Problems General Site-specific (i. e Poor Water quality) (i. e pointly appeared landslide) Problems should identified through field survey and then might be categorized as follows
FIELD!, FIELD!
e) Develop goals and objectives n n n Prioritization of the goals and objectives (Following the same procedure with problems) But taking also into consideration Magnitude of environmental improvements Budgetary constraints Social and economic factors
f) OBTAIN GRANTS n n n Municipal Regional National European International
ORGANIZE PUBLIC MEETINGS AND CONDUCT SURVEYS (Especially needfull for distributing or gathering data collection forms) n
n n n COLLECT DATA Existing Mapped Data GIS Data Existing Studies and Reports Rainfall and Streamflow Data Biological Data Water Quality Data
n n n EXISTING FACILITIES Anti-flood Facilities (Dams, Earth) Storm control Facilities (Deposits, extra torrential objects) Anti-erosion Facilities (Bank, Walls etc) Water Storage Facilities (Reservoirs)
