On June 17, 1972: Five ‘burglars’were arrested in the Democratic Party Head Quarters in Watergate Hotel – Not stealing, but planting bugging devices – All the burglars were linked to the Committee for the Re-election of President Nixon – President Nixon denied he had any knowledge about the incident.

Nov. 1972: Nixon won landslide election – Nixon thought Watergate was behind him – He was wrong
Senate investigates: • One of Nixon’s advisors claimed he discussed burglary at least 35 times with Nixon – Nixon denied any involvement and fired the advisor. • A Senate Investigation revealed Nixon recorded all conversations in the oval office since 1971 – The US Senate wanted the tapes – Nixon refused claiming he had “presidential privilege” (the right to keep secrets from the public)
US v. Nixon • The Supreme Court ordered Nixon to give up his tapes. • July 1974: – The House of representatives voted to impeach Nixon for obstruction of justice
Certain that he would be convicted by the Senate, on August 9, 1974, Nixon became the first U. S. president to resign from office.

LEGACY: • The case of US v. Nixon and the Watergate scandal proved that No one is above the law, not even the president. • Congress will protect from the abuses of the president by passing the War Powers Act, limiting the president’s ability to deploy U. S. forces without congressional approval. • Congress uses the Freedom of Information Act, protecting access to federal records.
