WATER POLLUTION What does pollution mean

Pollution • Pollution is when we add things to the ground, the air, or the water that will make it dirty or will bring harm to the life in and around it. • Pollution in our oceans, lakes, rivers and streams is a very serious matter.

Today we are looking at; • Processes of matter in water, air & land (CC 3) • Solutions, solids, acids, bases & p. H (CC 5) • Some chemical processes in soil, air & water from the environment & health (CC 6)

Is all water on our planet clean? • The water in our rivers and oceans are polluted by materials from humans. • The dumping of sewage, plastics, chemicals and the spillage of oil are all having an effect on the quality of water in the Water Cycle.

Farming & Fertilisers • These make the plants grow faster in the water. • This stops light reaching other water plants, and also reduces the amount of dissolved oxygen in the water. • Fish rely on this dissolved oxygen: without it, they die. • Nitrates from fertilizers can also find their way into our drinking water. • There are limits set for the amount of nitrate that we can drink safely. • Nitrates may cause stomach cancers.

Our Waters • People often dump liquids into oceans, lakes, rivers and streams. Some of these liquids will mix with water; others will not. • Which liquids mix with water? • Which liquids will not mix with water? • How do they get rid of the liquids in our water?

Task (KR 13) • Explain how and why water gets polluted. • Describe why pollution can be a threat to life • Discuss effects on the future of the ecosystem Extra • How can a lack of water lead to conflict between humans?
