Property #1: Water is Polar l POLARITY – ¡It has area with a slight positive charge, and an area with a slight negative charge.
Polarity l. This polarity gives us the property of Hydrogen Bonding.
Polarity Hydrogen Bonding allows one water molecule to “stick” to another water molecule.
Property #2: Cohesion is the ability for water molecules to stick to themselves Beads of Water
Property #3: Adhesion is the ability for water molecules to stick to other materials Meniscus in a graduated cylinder
Property #4: Capillary action ¡Capillary action is one of the forces that draw water out of the roots of a plant and up into its stems and leaves. ¡Cohesion holds the column of water together as it rises.
Property #5: Surface tension l Water has the ability to support small objects. l The hydrogen bonds between neighboring molecules cause a film to develop at the surface.
Property #6: A Great Solvent Remember… A solvent has the ability to dissolve other materials l Water is a solvent for many things l For example: The liquid part of your blood is 95% water l Some items, such as fats and oils DO NOT dissolve in water.
