CHALLENGES ❖ ❖ ❖ . The second largest populated country in the world, India faces various hindrances to its development. Solid Waste Management is of critical concern and needs attention. Whereas many developed countries are searching for ready-made sustainable Waste Management solutions, India has created institutions to take on the big challenge of formal research on the topic. As pointed out in the presentation, statistics show that in 2001 India generated 46 million tonnes of waste and by 2048 this number is predicted to reach an estimate of 125 million tonnes, making India the largest waste contributor of the world. ❖ ❖ ❖ Lack of awareness in people about the waste management process like how to dump, where to dump, how to segregate. Lack of enforcement : Like when the waste collector comes to collect the waste, even if the waste is segregated the waste will go in one truck and will be mixed Lack of urban resources
CLASSIFICATION OF WASTES ACCORDING TO THEIR ORIGIN AND TYPE ● ● ● ● Municipal Solid wastes: Solid wastes that include household garbage, rubbish, construction & demolition debris, sanitation residues, packaging materials, trade refugees etc. are managed by any municipality. Bio-medical wastes: Solid or liquid wastes including containers, intermediate or end products generated during diagnosis, treatment & research activities of medical sciences. Industrial wastes: Liquid and solid wastes that are generated by manufacturing & processing units of various industries like chemical, petroleum, coal, metal gas, sanitary & paper etc. Agricultural wastes: Wastes generated from farming activities. These substances are mostly biodegradable. Fishery wastes: Wastes generated due to fishery activities. These are extensively found in coastal & estuarine areas. Radioactive wastes: Waste containing radioactive materials. Usually these are byproducts of nuclear processes. Sometimes industries that are not directly involved in nuclear activities, may also produce some radioactive wastes, e. g. radioisotopes, chemical sludge etc. E-wastes: Electronic wastes generated from any modern establishments. They may be described as discarded electrical or electronic devices. Some electronic scrap components, such as CRTs, may contain contaminants such as Pb, Cd, Be or brominated flame retardants.
Recent most strategies and methodologies to deal with waste minimization under SDMC. ● How these strategies impact the attitudes and belief system of the residents for example, ● Many people have a belief that disposing off religious waste will count as committing a sin and hence, they put them under trees which also sometimes leads to big encroachments which is a problem in itself. Are we targeting the right people? ● Many times our seminars and workshops that deal with waste management are targeted for people who leave for work at 9 and then return at 6 only to enter and find their house clean and tidy. ● The actual workers in the house are not part of these strategies. ● Lastly, multiplicity of authorities in a city like Delhi is leading to large size of land going to unknown agencies, which pose a real challenge to the Municipality for effective treatment.
Some sustainable measures adopted by Municipal Councilor Radhika Abrol, SDMC to judiciously reduce emission of pollutants as part of antimalarial drive ❖ ❖ ❖ This is a new method which is pollution free and environment friendly for controlling mosquito. breeding which leads to dengue and malaria. These are gambusia fish that live in clean water and eat the larvae. Fishes will be used instead of traditional methods of spraying and fogging to control larvae of mosquito breeding causing vector borne diseases.
Waste to Wonder Park and other projects completed by SDMC which used tonnes of waste like iron tin discarded vehicles parts. This is at Green Park, Safdarjung Enclave and Sarai Kale Khan
Beautification as part of Sustainable development. A beautiful place encourages people to maintain it properly, psychologically Dhalao or Dumping grounds get beautified by Vertical Gardens so that people get encourage to dispose garbage inside the dhalao instead of putting it all over the place Waste Tyres being put to use for Selfie Point in MCD Parks in Safdarjung Enclave
Toilet blocks being erected at places used for open defecation. This has been done on large scale in SDMC and NDMC.
A Master Stroke: Let's Ban The Biggest Culprit Of Hampering Development Plastic The plastic control drive initiated under the Swachh Bharat Abhiyaan by the h’ble Prime Minister Modi ji to help our future generations to stay away from this slow poison and subsequently its consumption in form of fruits vegetables and now water.
Lastly sustainability aims for giving to our future generations as much as we can Let us plant as many trees as possible
