WASH SECTOR FLOOD CONTINGENCY PLAN
OVERALL GOAL Provide and maintain basic wash lifesaving service for population affected by heavy rains and flash flood, in most vulnerable across Sudan
RESPONSE STRATEGY • Joint assessment by government technical departments and WASH partners. • Strengthen coordination between government technical departments and WASH partners and coordination across sectors through the establishment of floods taskforce. • The Leadership of the response will be by the WES, while the WASH partners provide support. • Provision of assistance will be based on evidence, after needs assessment is conducted. Assistance should target only those who are in the greatest need.
Response interventions • Water trucking for 1 month in the affected areas. • Rehabilitation of hand pumps and water yards. • Chlorination of water sources in affected areas • Distribution of jerry cans. • Construction shared latrines. • Rehabilitation of household latrines. • Conducting clean-up campaigns and solid waste disposal campaigns. • Supporting vector control campaigns. • Training of staff of partners and government officials on chlorination and manage their facilities. • Timely monitoring of progress of WASH interventions in terms of quantity and quality.
Interventions Needs • Activating Coordination mechanism. • Collect existing info on water sources (mapping) and including functionality assessment. • Pre-position the materials (pumps, pipes, spare parts, slabs, frames, plastic sheets). • Assessment of essential supplies in the local market. • Provision of water quality kits, training & raise community awareness in Hygiene & vector control

Early Warning Indicators • Due to forecasted moderate to heavy rains over some areas in eastern parts of Sudan Sennar, Gadaref, Blue Nile, White Nile and Butana plains, seasonal streams (Khores and wadies ) expected endanger communities and inhabitants along these streams , highways may also be cut off for some time during the coming few days. The same is possible over Greater Darfur and Greater Kordofan. • Stagnant water and ponds, and poor basic services might result in outbreaks of the water borne areas especially in the border areas. • Blue Nile water level at Deim Station was 11. 36 m on August 1 st which is 46 cm higher than the level on previous day. • Steadily increasing is expected during the coming period coincides with peak season
Rainfall in the last 24 hours up to August 1 st The image shows moderate to heavy rains all over Sudan, occurred over Red Sea, River Nile, Kassla, Gedaref, Sennar, Blue Nile White Nile , South and West Kordofan, Southern parts of North Kordofan , East and South Darfur Central and West Darfur, Red Sea state as well as Gezera state.
Rainfall Forecast in the coming 48 hours from 2 to 3 August 2017 (SMA) Forecast issued by SMA during the above mentioned period indicates moderate rainfall over the Butana Plains , Khartoum, Kassala, Gedaref, Sennar, White Nile, Blue Nile, Greater Kordofan, and Greater Darfur.
Nile water levels in some stations (Ministry of Water Resources) Blue Nile at Deim station (11. 36 m) • Water level readings at Deim station is 11. 36 m on August 1 st which is 46 cm higher than the previous day. • The levels at E-Deim is still below the flooding level by 94 cm and below the level of 2016 the same day by 36 cm Blue Nile at Khartoum station (15. 16 m) • On August 1 st the level of the Blue Nile at Khartoum station is 15. 16 m (6 cm higher than the previous day) which is below the level of 2016 the same day by 82 cm and below the critical level by 84 cm. • Level at Khartoum is expected to rise in the coming 2 days by 50 cm. Precautionary measure have to be taken in Khartoum and River Nile to save lives and properties of communities along the river Nile and tributaries.
