American Revolution With this declaration, war with the British was declared, U. S was led by local militia leader George Washington With considerable aid from the French, and other European power, the colonists were victorious 1781 = Britain surrendered to the Americans in Yorktown, Virginia
New Constitution Federal system = power shared between national and state governments, system of checks and balances Still limited the rights of women and slaves, in spite of the idea of equality First time in history a government was overthrown and a new government was in place
