Mitochondria • Function: “Powerhouse” of the cell; produces the energy a cell needs to carry out its functions • Location: Plant & Animal Cells • How Can I Remember? I am a “mighty” powerhouse

Lysosomes • Function: Uses chemicals to break down food and worn out cell parts (digest, clean, and recycle) • Location: Animal Cells (SOME plant cells) • How Can I Remember? I clean things up! (Hint: Lysol)

Vacuoles • Function: Stores food, water, waste, and other materials • Location: Plant and Animal Cells • How Can I Remember? I’ll store anything (Hint: Vacuum Bags)

Golgi Apparatus • Function: Receives proteins & materials from the ER, packages them & distributes them. • Location: Plant and Animal Cells • How Can I Remember? I’m a GOLden packer.

Chloroplasts • Function: Captures energy from the sunlight and uses it to produce food in plant cells. • Location: Plant Cells • How Can I Remember? Make me something sweet to eat.

Endoplasmic Reticulum • Function: Has passageways that carry proteins and other materials from one part of the cell to another • Location: Plant and Animal Cells • How Can I Remember? I’m a transport. ER

Ribosomes • Function: Assembles amino acids to create proteins • Location: Plant and Animal Cells • How Can I Remember? I make “some” nice proteins

Nucleus • Function: Contains DNA, which controls the functions of the cell and production of proteins • Location: Plant and Animal Cells • How Can I Remember? I’m the control center.

Nucleolus • Function: Found inside the nucleus and produces ribosomes • Location: Plant and Animal Cells How Can I Remember? I’m in “control” of the number of “ribos”
