Review Ch. 1 Sec. 3 (p. 15 -18) Basic Concepts of Democracy
1. Fundamental Worth of the Individual • Each person has value • Dignity and worth of the individual • Sometimes the interests of the many must supercede the interests of the few
2. Equality of all persons • All of us are created equal • NOT equal abilities • Equal opportunity
3. Majority Rule and Minority Rights • The will of the majority dictates public policy • 50% + 1 • Majority cannot take away the voice of the minority
4. Necessity of Compromise • The process of blending and adjusting • Reconciling competing views and interests
5. Individual Freedom • The freedom to think, say, and do as you please • As long as your freedoms do not interfere with the freedoms of others
The Road to Democracy • Draw a roadmap to democracy. Your roadmap must contain the following things: – The 5 basic principles of democracy (2 signposts for each, using definitions and examples: 2 signposts for 5 principles =10 total) – 5 roadblocks to democracy (create 5 difficulties in achieving democracy, and label them as wrong turns, obstacles and dangers on the road) – 5 benefits people will have in your perfect democracy (list these at the end of the road)
