WARMUP Have a piece of notebook paper out
WARM-UP • Have a piece of notebook paper out and ready to take some notes today
SECTION 2. 6 OBJECTIVES • Solve problems using formulas for perimeter and area. • Solve problems using formulas for a circle’s area and circumference. • Solve problems using formulas for volume. • Solve problems involving the angles of a triangle. • Solve problems involving complementary and supplementary angles.
PROBLEM SOLVING IN GEOMETRY • Geometry is about the space you live in and the shapes that surround you.
COMMON FORMULAS FOR PERIMETER AND AREA
USING THE FORMULA FOR THE AREA OF A TRIANGLE • A sailboat has a triangular sail with an area of 30 square feet and a base that is 12 feet long. Find the height of the sail.
GEOMETRIC FORMULAS FOR CIRCUMFERENCE AND AREA OF A CIRCLE • Find the area and circumference of a circle with a diameter measuring 20 inches. •
PROBLEM SOLVING USING THE FORMULA FOR A CIRCLE’S AREA • Which one of the following is a better buy: a large pizza with a 16 -inch diameter for $15. 00 or a medium pizza with an 8 -inch diameter for $7. 50 •

THE ANGLES OF A TRIANGLE • An angle is formed by two rays that have a common endpoint. • The sum of the measures of the three angles of any triangle is 180 degrees. • Two angles with measures having a sum of 90 degrees are call complementary angles. • Two angles with measures having a sum of 180 degrees are call supplementary angles. • Algebraic Expressions for Complements and Supplements • Measure of an angle: x • Measure of the angle’s complement: 90 -x • Measure of the angle’s supplement: 180 -x
PRACTICE PROBLEM • A triangle is made of angles x, 2 x, and x-20. Find the value of x and the values of each angle.
PRACTICE PROBLEM • The measure of an angle is 40 degrees less than four times the measure of its complement. What is the angle’s measure?
