Warm-Up February 19 What is the composition of the atmosphere? 78% Nitrogen 21% Oxygen 1% CO 2, water vapor, neon, hydrogen, and other gases
W H A T would you wear?
Earth Science Rocks • MYP Unit Question: What should I wear today? • Area of Interaction: Environment • Learner Profile: Communicator • Standard: Understand how the distribution of land oceans affect weather and climate. • Learning Target: Today I am learning how the movement of air masses create fronts. If it’s written in BLUE, you need to write it down.
Air Masses and Weather Fronts
Why do we need to know about weather fronts? See what type of weather we are having. Prepare for severe weather.
A boundary between two distinct air masses is called a weather front.
Weather Front Symbols ? ? Which is Which? ?
Types of Fronts • There are 4 types of fronts: – Cold Fronts – Warm Fronts – Stationary Fronts – Occluded Fronts
Warm Fronts A warm front occurs when a less dense air mass rides up over a more dense air mass.
• Warm air replaces cold air. • Warm Fronts bring drizzly rain and are followed by warm, clear weather. Map Symbol

Cold Front
Cold Fronts • Cold air moves under the less dense warm air. • Cold Fronts move quickly, bring thunderstorms, heavy rain or snow and cool weather follows. Map Symbol http: //ww 2010. atmos. uiuc. edu/(Gl)/guides/crclm/act/gifs/fpr 2. gif http: //earthsci. org/processes/weather/weaimages/2 g. gif
Occluded Front A warm air mass is caught between two cooler air masses
Occluded Fronts • Forms when a warm air mass is caught between two colder air masses. • Cool temperatures • Large amounts of rain and snow. Map Symbol • http: //www. uwsp. edu/geo/faculty/ritter/images/atmosphere/weather/cold_occlusion. gif
Stationary Front
Stationary Fronts • Forms when a cold air mass meets a warm air mass • But, neither have enough force to lift the warm air mass over the cold air mass. • The two masses stay separated and the front remains stationary. symbol
Exit Ticket • Write this on a separate sheet of paper and hand it to me at the door. • Describe what happens in a Warm Front. What happens to the warm air? What happens to the cold air? What type of weather will it bring?
