Totalitarianism Chapter 13 Section 4

Joseph Stalin • Once Lenin died, Trotsky and Stalin fought for control of the Communist party. • Stalin- “Man of Steel” • Quiet type, wasn’t noticed much. • Lenin was scared of Stalin’s potential.

Trotsky • Stalin placed all of his men into important positions in the government. • By 1928, Stalin ran the U. S. S. R. • Trotsky, his one time friend, was forced into exile and later killed by Stalin.

Totalitarianism • Total, Centralized state control over public and private life. • BIG BROTHER!!! • Hitler and Mussolini emerge in this time as totalitarian leaders too. • Command Economy • The Government determines what the country needs and meets it.

An Industrial Revolution • 2 Five Year Plans for Industry. • No choice in jobs, assignment or hours. • From 1928 to 1937, U. S. S. R. ’s industrial output went up 25%!! • The way these positions were forced on people caused huge relationship strains. • High quotas were set.

The Agricultural Revolution • Collective Farms. • Produced food for the state. • Whole families were forced to work together. • Many resisted through killing livestock and destroying crops. • Kulaks • Wealthy peasants who resisted. • Stalin killed them off entirely!!! • By 1938, 90% of all peasants lived on these farms.
