Warm Up-Name Write your first, middle, and last name. If you don’t have a middle name, write “None” Now write everything you know about these names. Here are some questions. • Do I like my name? Why or why not? • What nicknames have I been called that stem from my name? • How does my name affect who I am? • • • For a given name, why did my parents choose this name? Did Mom or Dad particularly like the name? When did my parents decide on the name (six months before birth, at the hospital, after my birth, etc. )? Did this name belong to a relative or ancestor? What is the origin of the name? What does the name mean? How common is my name? Is my name more common among a certain group of people (for example, “My name is more common in the North than in the South because it is a common Italian name and many Italians live in the northern United States”)? Which famous people share my name? Has my name ever been used in a book, poem, or song?

Name Research • Ask your parents about your name. • You are going to write an “Explanation” essay. • You are going to write 3 paragraphs in class. For all 3 paragraphs, you can either choose to write them about your first, middle, or last name or a combination. You will begin the 1 st paragraph on Monday and write the 2 nd and 3 rd ones on Tuesday. Your homework on Monday will be to gather the information you need to complete the 2 nd and 3 rd paragraphs on Tuesday. 1. A paragraph about how your name has influenced your life 2. A paragraph about how/why your parents picked that name. 3. A paragraph about the meaning of your name/where it originated/who shares it (you will have to get this information from online) Everyone will share his or her essay.
