Warm Up 2. Identify the mean, median, mode and range for each set of data a) 2, 6, 4, 6, 8, 12, 16, 18, 32, 7, 9, 11 Mean: 10. 92 Median: 8. 5 Mode: 6 Range: 30 b) 0, 19, 21, 17, 23, 26, 12, 19, 18, 20, 9, 12 Mean: 16. 33 Median: 18. 5 Mode: 12 and 19 Range: 26
Box and Whisker Plot Box and Whisker Plots are separated into quartiles (or quarters) Data is separated into percentiles (like when you take the PSAT and learn your math skills are in the 90 percentile) They show concentration of values (including the degree of dispersion and skew)
The Five Number Summary The five number summary from a set of data is: 1. The minimum (smallest) value 2. The maximum (largest) value 3. The median (middle) value 4. The 1 st quartile (Q 1) value [i. e. the “middle” number of the lower half] 5. The 3 rd quartile (Q 3) value [i. e. the “middle” number of the upper half]
The five number summary is displayed on the box-and-whisker plot: Median 1 st Quartile 3 rd Quartile
The Interquartile Range or IQR The Interquartile Range or “IQR” is the middle 50% of your data. It is the data between Q 1 and Q 3.
To find your interquartile range (IQR): …. . Just subtract: Q 3 – Q 1 = your IQR Q 3 = 85 Q 1 = 66 85 – 66 = 19 Interquartile Range: 19

Which athlete would you draft? Below are box and whisker plots for two players’ free throw percentages last season Player 1 Player 2
Practice Work Sample The grades of 10 students from two different teachers are shown below. Each sample is a good representation of the grades of the students in each teacher’s class. As a student forecasting for next year, which teacher would you rather have? Support your answer by comparing center, shape, Grades and spread of the two sets of data. Teacher A 76. 5 80 92 91 60 75 81 78 83 88 Teacher B 77 94 72 72 68 68 68 70 81 99
