WARM UP Use mental math to solve the equation: 1. f – 21 = 30 2. m – (– 11) = 17 3. p + (-2) = 8 4. Find the mean (average) of the following numbers: 3, 5, 8, 9, 9, 8 5. Find the next number in the pattern: 2, -6, 18, - 54, _____
1. 5 DIVIDING INTEGERS 9/18
LEARNING OBJECTIVE Today you will be able to divide integers, evaluate expressions with division, and calculate the mean of integers.
HOW TO DIVIDE INTEGERS… Good news! The rules are EXACTLY the same as the rules for multiplying! • So an odd amount of – signs will give you a negative answer, and an even amount of – signs will give you a positive answer. • Then just solve as normal!!!

FINDING THE MEAN (AVERAGE) Use your previous knowledge of finding mean (average) and combine it with today’s knowledge of how to multiply and divide integers. To find the mean (average), add up all the numbers listed, then divide the total by the amount of numbers you are given. Use your rules about adding/subtracting integers and dividing integers.
FINDING THE MEAN (AVERAGE): EXAMPLE Find the mean (average) of the following number set: 3, -3, 5, -7, 9, -1 1. Add up the numbers 2. Count how many numbers were given 3. Divide your total from step one by how many numbers there are.
FINDING THE MEAN (AVERAGE): WORD PROBLEM A cat’s change in weight monthly is shown. What is his mean monthly change in weight? Month 1 -3 Month 2 +2 Month 3 -1 Month 4 +4 Month 5 +8
