Warm Up • On the half sheet of paper on the i. Pad cart. • What 3 human activities are the leading causes of global warming? • What are 3 things that we can do to prevent global warming?
THE OZONE LAYER What is it? Where is it? Why is it important to life on Earth? How are we as humans affecting it?
• Take out your plickers cards • Which of the following is not a green house gas? • A)Carbon Dioxide • B) Water Vapor • C)Methane • E) Nitrogen Gas
• What is the number 1 source of greenhouse gas emissions? • A)Fossil Fuel burning to make electricity • B) Fossil Fuel burning for transportation • C) Methane from livestock • D) Fertilizer Use
What is the ozone layer? • The ozone layer is a layer of gas in the stratosphere made of O 3 molecules.
Where is the ozone layer? • The ozone layer of gas in the stratosphere.
Earth’s Atmosphere
Plickers Review • What is the ozone layer? – A) The cause of global warming – B) A layer made of CO 2 – C) A layer made of O 3 – D) A layer in the earth’s crust • • • Where is the ozone layer? A) Troposphere B)Stratosphere C)Mesosphere D)Thermosphere
Why ozone important to life on Earth? • Ultraviolet Radiation comes from the Sun and hits Earth. – Some UV radiation is good a gives us warmth – Too much UV radiation is deadly
• The ozone layer completely blocks deadly UV-C rays and filters out most of the UV-B rays. • Therefore, the ozone layer protects life on Earth from the harmful effects of solar radiation on a daily basis.
Plickers Review • Why is the ozone layer important to life on Earth? • A) Keeps the Earth warm • B) Keeps the Earth cool • C) Filters harmful Ultraviolet Rays from the sun • D) Prevents Global warming
So what might life be like without the ozone layer?
How are we as humans affecting the ozone layer? • Chlorofluorocarbons are chemicals used in refrigerators, fire extinguishers, dry cleaning agents, pesticides, degreasers, adhesives, hair spray and spray paint. • When CFCs get into the atmosphere, they destroy the ozone layer.
Quick Review • What type of chemicals destroy ozone? – A) Acids – B) Chlorofluorocarbons (CFCs) – C) Methane – D) Nitrites • What products use these chemicals? – A) Spray paints – B) Refrigerators – C) Hair Spray – D) All of the above
And the effects of all those CFCs. . .
So what about the hole in the ozone layer? October 1979 October 2007
The Ozone Hole • The ozone layer has a hole over the Antarctic. That lets the deadly UV rays come in unfiltered.
Chile’s Ozone Hole
So what are we doing about it? • Countries from all around the world decided to do something about this problem and adopted the Vienna Convention in 1985 followed by the Montreal Protocol in 1987. • Most countries around the world banned CFCs and the hole is healing • Ozone video 1 Ozone video 2
What can we do, as concerned citizens, to ensure that our children have a viable planet to inhabit?
