Warm Up 1 What has been your favorite
Warm Up 1. What has been your favorite thing about 6 grade so far? n 2. How do you think you did on the test? n 3. What are the 7 levels of classification? n
Kingdoms How are viruses different from bacteria?
What are the 6 Kingdoms? n Archaebacteria n Eubacteria n Protists n Fungi n Plants n Animals
Bacteria Micro- small (microscope- to look at small things) n Bacteria used to be classified into one kingdom called Monerans. n Now it’s split into two kingdoms: Archaebacteria and Eubacteria n
Bacteria are prokaryotes n Pro – before n Karyon – nucleus n The simplest forms of life are prokaryotes. n Earth’s first cells were prokaryotes.
Eubacteria n They are the common bacteria that causes the diseases we are familiar with.
Archaebacteria These are the oldest bacteria. n They are found in extreme conditions like hot springs and thermal vents in the ocean under conditions with no oxygen or highly acid environments. n
Shape n Rod: bacillus n Spheres: coccus n Spirals: spirillum
n Bacteria reproduce rapidly.
Viruses Dead or alive?
Viral structure Viruses are not cells. n Basic structure: n n Protein coat Nucleic acid core (RNA or DNA) Lipoprotein coat n (second coat – only in enveloped viruses)
Is A Virus Alive? This may look like a space capsule, but it's actually a virus. n n The top part is the capsid, the body is the sheath, and the tails at the bottom help the virus attach to its host
Is A Virus Alive? Viruses are right on the border between living and nonliving. n Viruses must have a host cell to live and reproduce. n Outside of the host cell, viruses are pieces of genetic molecules that can do nothing by themselves. n

Warm Up 1. What is eubacteria? n 2. What is archaebacteria? n 3. What is a virus? n 4. What are the shapes of bacteria? n 5. What are all of the kingdoms? n
Virus Stages 1. 2. Virus attaches Virus injects DNA n 3. 4. 5. Hostile takeover of cell Cell forced to make virus parts. Virus splits the cell So many = blows the cell apart
Let’s Compare! Viruses Bacteria Not A Kingdom 2 Kingdoms Not Alive! Smaller than a cell IS a cell
Let’s Compare! Viruses Bacteria Cannot Reproduce Can reproduce on on own its own NOT Microorganism Can Cause Disease
Let’s Compare! Viruses Benefits: none Bacteria Benefits: Decomposition Digestion
Warm UP 1. What are the stages of virus reproduction? n 2. What are the 6 characteristics of life? n 3. What is eubacteria? What is archaebacteria? Where are they found? n 4. Go get your potatoes and wait for instructions. n
n Some Bacteria live symbiotically in the guts of animals or elsewhere in their bodies. n For example, bacteria in your gut produce vitamin K which is essential to blood clot formation.
n Bacteria put the tang in yogurt and the sour in sourdough bread. n Saprobes help to break down dead organic matter. n Bacteria make up the base of the food web in many environments. Streptococcus thermophilus in yogurt
