CLAIM • Paragraphs begin with a sentence that includes a subject and an interpretation. • The two main functions of a topic sentence are to make a point that supports thesis of the essay and to indicate the main idea of a paragraph.

CLAIM (EXAMPLES) § Carrie Nation became a hero because she fought to end the poverty created for women and children by alcoholic husbands and fathers. § OR § Carrie Nation was a villain because she terrorized and destroyed the businesses of those who served alcohol.

ADD EVIDENCE • Specific and relevant facts, details, examples, and quotations are used to support the topic sentence and thesis and to develop ideas.

EVIDENCE • Identify evidence from texts that supports your argument. • Begin with “For example, ”. • Give credit to the source.

REASONING • What does your quote mean? Put it in terms your reader will understand.

LINK • How does your point, evidence, and reasoning connect to the abstract noun you are arguing? What does this paragraph have to do with your argument? How does it prove what you are wanting to say?

Abstract Noun Claim Evidence 1 Reasoning Link (to abstract noun) EXAMPLE PARAGRAPH • Both Abraham Lincoln and Frederick Douglass fought for freedom. Abraham Lincoln is remembered for using his power and influence as president to free slaves. As Dr. Phineas Gurley stated in Lincoln’s White House Funeral Sermon, “He is dead; but the cause he so ardently loved, so ably, patiently, faithfully represented, not for us only, but for all the people in all the coming generations, …survives…. ” What Gurley is saying is that although Lincoln is dead, his legacy of fighting for the rights of others. He will be honored for his dedication to freedom for all Americans.
