CLAIM • Paragraphs begin with a sentence that includes a subject and an interpretation. • The two main functions of a topic sentence are to make a point that supports thesis of the essay and to indicate the main idea of a paragraph.

Abraham Lincoln is remembered for using his power and influence as president to free slaves. As Dr. Phineas Gurley stated in Lincoln’s White House Funeral Sermon, “He is dead; but the cause he so ardently loved, so ably, patiently, faithfully represented, not for us only, but for all the people in all the coming generations, …survives…. ” What Gurley is saying is that although Lincoln is dead, his legacy of fighting for the rights of others. He will be honored for his dedication to freedom for all Americans.
