The Domino Sugar Refinery Complex
The Raw Sugar Warehouse Inside Outside
History - Located at Williamsburg Brooklyn, from 290 - 350 Kent Avenue between 5 th and 2 nd st West side. - The compound has a total area of 717, 000 ft 2 - The Domino Sugar Refinery was built in 1881. - It was initially known as the W. & F. C. Havemeyer Company, then changed to the American Sugar Company, then to Amstar Sugar Corporation, and finally to Domino Sugar Corporation in 1901.
- Sugar production was one of Brooklyn’s most important industries and the Domino Sugar Refinery was the largest in the world. - The most significant of the buildings we remember today are the Pan, Finishing, and Filter houses which hold the huge 70 by 120 feet neon sign. - On January 8 1882, a fire destroyed the factory, particularly the refinery and finishing house amounting to about a loss of 1. 5 million.
- Expansion started after this fire and onwards, a total of 14 buildings comprised the complex. - In 2000, the refinery was the site for one of the longest labor strikes, which lasted 20 months, in New York City because of poor working conditions. - It shut down in 2004 after operating for 148 years. The Raw Sugar Warehouse - The Raw Sugar Warehouse was constructed in 1927, west of the Pan, Filter, and Finishing Houses. - It is a 2 story high, 505 feet long, approximately 100 feet wide building.
Current Neighborhood - Currently, there is a condominium boom, and an increase of construction of buildings and apartments. - It is considered a new haven for young people. - In 2008, there is the Brooklyn Waterfront Greenway long term vision plans which includes installation of more traffic lights, bike lanes, access and connections to waterfront, development of parks. - The area around the refinery is filled with abandoned buildings, but that area will allow for development. - Since there is an increase in it’s development, it is necessary to create this public facility.
