War of 1812 James Madison won the election of 1812, and decided to go to war against Britain. Congress approved the declaration of war in June. War in Canada: US is unprepared for war. Suffers defeats at first, however rebounds & won several battles. Natives align with the British. War at Sea: Britain blockaded US shoreline, bottling up many ships in their ports. Major events: British burned the White House & other public buildings in Washington DC. Jackson fought the Battle of New Orleans & defeated the British Treaty of Ghent: Dec. 1814, ended the war. However, did not answer some of the big issues (impressment & shipping rights). These issues were answered a few years later
