Biography: Walter Langley was born in Birmingham, on June 8, 1852. He was an English painter and a founder of the "Newlyn School". He began his career as a lithographer in Birmingham when he was fifteen years old and, in 1873, he got a scholarship to study design in London, in the “National Training Scholl”, South Kensington. After returning to Birmingham, he devoted himself to figurative painting in watercolor. Langley married Clara Perkins and they had four children. In 1881 he was elected as an associate of the “Royal Birmingham Society of Artists”. His skill to produce great works, that combined a broad movement in a simplified manner with an understanding of the field of texture and facial expression, owes much to the painter Josef Israëls and to the contemporary Dutch school of watercolor painters. His training in lithography gives his paintings a detail and texture that proves his technical capacity. Politically left wing for his era, he was known for his social realistic portrayals of working classes figures, chiefly the fishers and their families, standing out the difficulties and tragedies that were habitual at that period. As a member of the “Institute of Watercolor Painters” (1883) and of the “Royal Birmingham Society of Artists” (1884), Walter exhibited as much in England as around the world. In 1895 his wife Clara died. In 1897 he married Ethel Pengelly and they had a son. Silent Sorrow Walter Langley died in Penzance, on March 21, 1922.
