Walter Gropius was born in 1883 in Berlin. In 1915 Gropius married Alma Mahler (1879– 1964) and their daughter Manon was born in 1916. In 1920 Walter and Alma got divorced. Walter Gropius with his wife Alma and his daughter Manon.

In 1903 Walter Gropius began to study architecture on the technical university of München, which he continued at the technical university of Berlin Charlottenburg. In 1910 Gropius and his fellow employee Adolf Meyer established a architectural office in Berlin. Together they created one of the modernist buildings during this period: the Faguswerk in Alfeld-an-der-Leine, Germany, a shoe factory.
