Simplifying fractions You can simplify a fraction if the numerator (top number) and denominator (bottom number) can both be divided by the same number. . 6 1 = 12 2 Six twelfths can be simplified to one half, or 1 over 2 because both numbers are divisible by 6. 6 goes into 6 once and 6 goes into 12 twice

Simplifying Fractions To simplify a fraction means to find the smallest equivalent fraction. So if I had 4 and wanted to simplify, I would need to find the 10 smallest equivalent fraction to this. I can start by looking at both the 4 and 10 and deciding what number I can divide both by or by finding a ‘common factors’. Both 4 and 10 are divisible by 2 so I will divide my fraction by 2. 2 = 5 which is the simplest form.
