How can you find fractions of numbers? For example: There is a question that says: Find a third of 78. How do you do it? You look at the fraction the question is asking you to find… THIRD. What number can you hear in ‘third’? Three.

How can you find fractions of numbers? � Then, you divide 78 by 3. � You can use lots of different methods: the long method, short division or bus stop or even the chunking method. � What’s the answer? � 26. � Then you multiply it by one. If it was TWO THIRDS, you would multiply it by two – which is the numerator.

FINDING FRACTIONS OF AMOUNTS You simply: Divide the number by the denominator Then multiply this by the numerator So ¾ of anything means you divide the number by 4, then multiply by 3: ¾ of 256 means: 256 ÷ 4 = 64 then 64 x 3 = 192
