The Celtic Cross • The Celtic/ringed cross has been a Celtic symbol since ancient times in Scotland, Ireland, Wales and parts of modern day England. • Some people believe the cross was introduced by St Patrick when he was converting pagans to Christianity. • It has been said that St Patrick combined the Christian cross with the pagan sun to give the newly converted followers the idea of the importance of the cross by linking it with the symbolism of the life-giving properties of the sun. • Crosses originally appeared on important religious sites. • Some people used ringed crosses as headstones/tombstones. • Where else have you seen the ringed/Celtic cross?
