Mayan cities were not planned. They developed rather higgledy-piggledy. There were no real streets as such, merely areas packed with stone pyramids (with steeply-stepped staircase often with temples on top) and with palaces in the centre. Further from the centre were the homes of poorer people. These were made of upright poles tied tightly together and a thatched roof, made of palms which prevented the rain getting in. Furthest away from the centre of the cities could be found the farmers’ homes. These were built on platforms of dirt or stone to protect them from floods.
The common people and slaves wore simple loin cloths whilst the rulers at the top of society, the elite, added feathers, animal skins and gems.
