Key vocabulary: • diet, exercise, lifestyle, athlete, training, regime, intensity, prepare, competition, sport, engagement
What sports do you participate in regularly? What sport in our class do you think has the most participants? Why do you think that might be? Are there any sports that you have never tried? Which is your favourite sport and why? What encouraged you to take up your favourite sport?
Look at the new few pages, they show a series of quotes from the world of sports about motivation, engagement, fitness and determination. Choose one of these athletes and consider the following: What motivates them to take part? Why do you think that is? What are the benefits of sport and exercise? How do you think people choose what sport to do?
WALT: Create a new sport for others to participate in WILF: research sport and the benefits to health Create an exciting, engaging and challenging sport (maybe by combining existing sports together) Create a platform to persuade others to try my sport. Today you are going to link what you know about a healthy lifestyle (consider the previous lessons we have covered in this unit so far), food, exercise, pulse rate and the circulatory system to write an advert for a new sport, encouraging other Year 6 to take part. Challenge 1: Using the ‘create a new sport’ sheet, plan your ideas with the headings given. Once you have completed this, create your advert for your new sport and include pictures and colour. Challenge 2: Children create a poster advert for a new sport. Use the sheet given Challenge 2 – ‘create a new sport’ Use the prompts given to create a persuasive poster to encourage Year 6 classmates to participate in a new sport. Select a sport or exercise you may know a little about although not necessarily have tried themselves. What does the sport involve? Why would it be a good sport to take up? Refer to secondary sources carefully to ensure they use facts to give reasons for taking part and opinions to persuade and encourage motivation. Use the vocabulary given for the lesson. Challenge 3: Select a presentation method of your own (hand written, pictorial, powerpoint) and research a new extreme sport to engage with. You are to prepare a persuasive advert for a new or extreme sport of your choice. Have you included the mental and physical benefits of the sport? Have you provided enough evidence about the sport to persuade others to take part? Have you referred to secondary sources to support your research?
