Wake STEM ECHS Kaila Young
Where? • I did my internship at Wake STEM Early College High School. – Five Year Program – Small Classes – Student-centered, Project-based Learning – Very future oriented
Gains • I gained a lot of valuable knowledge overall which includes: – How to exhibit professional teaching qualities, such as: design Common Core Aligned lessons, lead classroom lessons, maintain classroom organization, and support student learning outcomes. – Building relationships with students are the key to know student learning styles and building a positive environment! – The average day in the life of a teacher is ANYTHING but average!
What did I do? • On a typical day I… – Updated my timeline on Google Drive – Helped maintain classroom organization – Co-planned lessons with Mrs. Gambino – Assisted students in their learning • I also got to go to other classes and observe them. – Observed other Wake STEM ECHS teachers – Observed at Hunter Elementary • We taught at two conferences. • Digital Literacies Bootcamp • National Reading Association Conference
How did my classes and internship relate? • I used some basic things from classes like: – Organization – Time management – Knowing how to collaborate with various colleagues and students • I also utilized coursework from Wake STEM/NC State: – Public Speaking skills – Psychology/ Sociology – English IV

Future Plans • Going through this internship has definitely been eye opening. • I went from thinking that teaching is a possibility for a future career to knowing teaching is my dream. • I want to get a Bachelors of Science from NC State in Secondary English. – Major in English – Minor in History • I hope to teach at a comprehensive high school.
