Implications § Technically Io. T platforms enable the most important Industrial Internet (II) activities relating to data transfer, remote connections, information management and exploitation in domain specific context. § The platforms as products, services, or technologies provide the foundation upon which outside firms (organized as a “business ecosystem”) can develop their own complementary products, technologies, or services (A. Gawer). § The most important implication is the business transformation enabled by Io. T: strengthening operations, enabling new business models and keeping up with tightening competition. 10/12/2015 6

Way forward There is “an embarrassment of riches” relating to IOT PLATFORMS IN THE MARKET. § The assessment and selection of the most suitable platform for a purpose is challenging, but manageable. § Developing more new platforms from the scratch is economically more than questionable. Also in the future, there will be SEVERAL IOT PLATFORM FORERUNNERS in the field instead of only one clear market leader. § The vital ecosystem around the platform will be essential for success. § Technically the focus will be turned into interoperability of different platforms -> Standards needed (e. g. Open Group’s O-DF & O-MI) In the end, the MOST IMPORTANT IS SUCCESSFUL BUSINESS MODEL 10/12/2015 § Platform enables it and solutions brings it alive. 7
