If parliament doesn’t look like the people that it represents, then it is not as relevant as it should be. - Shabana Mahmood Shabana grew up in Birmingham and was involved in politics from a young age – giving out leaflets and knocking on doors with her dad. She dreamed of becoming a barrister and studied law at Oxford University before becoming a highly successful lawyer. Deciding that she wanted to return to her home city, she moved back and became Birmingham’s first female Muslim MP in 2010. She is passionate about fighting cuts to policing, legal representation for migrants and helping her constituents with housing problems. There are not many representatives of ethnic minorities working in Parliament and Shabana has described it as a ‘culture shock’. What virtues has she shown? One of the most important roles of MPs is creating and passing new laws. What are laws? What is the difference between rules and laws? You should treat others as you would like to be treated. You can’t use your hand to touch the football unless you are the goalie. Walk in the corridors. The speed limit on motorways is 70 mph. Children are entitled to a free education. You cannot graffiti in public places.
If you could make one law that would make our community a better place, what would it be?
