Program Goal The goal is to enable community members to assist school personnel in helping young people more fully develop their skills, their potential as individuals, and their mastery of subject matter.
Opportunities • • • Classroom assistance Media Center assistance Tutoring math or reading Office / Photocopying Book Fair Field Day Field Trips Lunch/Cafeteria Recess/Playground Class Parties: Fall Harvest Festival & Valentine’s Day Donate dry snacks to classroom (ex: box of cereal/goldfish)
Volunteer Qualifications • Time to donate • Acceptance of individual differences in students • An appreciation for all racial and ethnic groups • A warm friendly attitude • Ability to work with others • A genuine interest in students • Completion of the online training: Recognizing and Reporting Child Abuse
Volunteer Responsibilities • • • Complete the Volunteer Application. Communicate with supervising teacher to arrange a schedule. Be dependable – arrive promptly. Sign in and out in the Visitor Management System. Wear a visitor tag or volunteer badge. Before leaving, sign the Volunteer Log Book. Comply with school system policies and regulations. When working with students, remain within view of others. Be discrete…keep school information confidential. Discuss program plans, successes and problems with the staff Report behavioral problems to the supervising staff member. Do not discipline any students.
NEW THIS YEAR! • All volunteers must complete the online training on Recognizing & Reporting Child Abuse and Neglect. • Parents must access the training through the Parent Portal! http: //www. montgomeryschoolsmd. org/childabuseandneglect • A printed confirmation of completion must be brought or sent to the main office. • Confirmation is valid for three years.
School Policies and Procedures • School hours - staff: 8: 20 am – 3: 50 pm • School hours - students: 8: 40 am – 3: 25 pm • Safety and Security ü Fire drills/LES (Lockdown, Evacuate, Shelter) • Reporting Child Abuse and Neglect ü Interrupt but do not investigate. ü Make an oral report to CPS -- 240 -777 -4417 ü Notify the Principal ü Submit a written report within 48 hours. ü Cooperate with any investigation.
