QUICK WRITE • Choose 1 item from the voluntary changes that you have made and write for 10 minutes describing the change, why you made the change and what effect it had on you. • Write on worksheet
PARALLEL SENTENCE STRUCTURE (LINK) • Remember there are 2 parts to any sentence, a subject (who or what the sentence is talking about) and the predicate (what the subject is doing). • Ex. Johanna is a girl who is a true friend. • Parallel Sentence Structure is a way to compose (write) more interesting and efficient sentences. It is a way to give writing a rhythm and put many ideas in one sentence.
HOW? • Combine three or more ideas of equal importance in a series. –Words –Phrases –Clauses
EXAMPLES • Johanna is a girl who is true- true to friends, true to family and true to herself. • We will swim in the ocean, lie on the beach, and sleep under the stars. • Carrie loved swimming, running, and playing tennis. • The little boy’s eyes were swollen shut, his face was red and puffy, and his nose was lopsided.
EXAMPLES • Every day, John walked in the door, threw his backpack on the chair, and opened the refrigerator. • Gabriel was lonely, intelligent, and kind. • You may sit in the back, your may sit in the front, or you may sit anywhere in between. • Simba and Nala went to the elephant graveyard, ran from the hyenas, and got in trouble with Mufasa.
PARALLEL SENTENCE STRUCTURE • AFTER reading “Bad Boy” in your Spring Board book about Parallel Sentence Structure. (PSS for short) • Look at your quick write. Where could you use parallel sentence structure to make it more interesting? Write at least ONE example of a parallel sentence tht you could use in your paragraph. • WE WILL PRACTICE THIS IN THE FUTURE ALSO.
